MAY 2008 - THE BIG TRIPS!

We know that May is a busy month, with exams and assignment deadlines, but don't let them get you down! Escape the stress with the best walking weekends of the year! Check out the details below and get the assignments done early (well, what else are the Easter holidays for?!) - we want you on the trips...If you want any further info, drop the committee a line with your queries!
...

1st-5th May 2008 - IEPER 100km (WWW.100KM.BE)

On the May bank holiday we'll be returning to Ieper (Ypres) in Belgium to participate in the 37th International 100km March. Staying in military tents in the historic Belgian town, we'll spend three days covering a distance of anything between 15km and 100km. You can walk as far (or as little) as you like, chosing the distance as you go depending on how your legs feel.

Last year almost everybody finshed the entire 100km, with a couple of crazy people even walking 110km!

This is a different experience to our regular weekend trips, as we will be walking alongside groups from across the globe, military units and individual - it's very social and includes a great barbecue on the Saturday night. Ieper is in the centre of the Flanders fields, so is also of historical interest to anyone interested in the first world war, with many memorials along the walking route.

We will leave Leeds early on the morning of Thursday 1st May, returning in the afternoon of Monday 5th. The cost of the trip will be just £95 for the five days which includes all food, accommodation and transport.

As the trip is more expensive than other club events, we're giving you the chance to pay in installments. You may sign up at any point from 26th February with a £40 deposit. The balance of £55 must be paid by 8th April at the latest. This will also be the final date you can sign up for the trip, as we have to book and pay for the accommodation in advance.

This is a great experience, so if you can find the time between exams and assignments (& the cash obviously!) we greatly recommend it.

23rd-26th May 2008 - SCOTLAND
(Ben Nevis and other mountains)

On the Spring bank holiday, we'll be heading up to the Scottish highlands to do some hiking in the beautiful and more challenging terrain in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain. We'll be staying at Aite Cruinnichidh, (relatively!) top quality accommodation in Achluachrach, north-east of Fort William. This bunk house even has a sauna!

This is traditionally a very social weekend and weather permitting we'll be heading up to the top of Britain, be it via the tourist route (for the mortals) or the north ridge (for the more daring - see the photo!).

The Scotland weekend is the highlight of the year, a great chance to relax after the craziness of exams and assignment hand-ins. We make the most of the holiday weekend to leave early on the Friday and return late Monday - that's three days of quality walking (& drinking!) time.

The cost this year has been set at a mere £60 for the 4 days, a bargain price which, as always, covers all transport, food and accommodation. The sign-up for Scotland will open on Tuesday 8th April, which happens to coincide with the club AGM. Places are limited, and will be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis.

For an idea of what to expect, take a look at last year's photos - you'd be crazy to miss it....!
