The Christmas Party - 13th Dec. 2007
The SU Bar, Headingley Campus

It was quite a quiet party, partly due to the size of the venue compared to the size of the club, but partly due to the number of other parties going on and assignment deadlines!

Ben provided the music for the night, with a wide selection of party and Christmas tunes. There was a great (?) game of musical chairs and a slightly less successful game of musical statues. Much pool was played and beer drank, and by the end of the night most were on the dance floor for some classic tunes.

It wasn't the most exciting of parties, but it was a good social night and everyone had a great time. Most importantly, there were no arguments with bouncers to ruin the evening! Have a great Christmas, and see you all next year!

Harrogate Day Walk – 9th December 2007
We all met up at Pannal train station bright an early on Sunday morning. Only 5 walkers turned out!! We set off and Ben immediately went off to a geocache! We went round the back of a few houses then through quite a few fields and finally onto open ground. It was fairly wet under foot and Vince began chuntering on how he should have worn his gaiters!

We passed through a flock of sheep, with some strange conversations about how pretty these sheep were?? We went a bit special with a climb over a fence to get back on the path. We came up to Beckwithshaw where we stopped and contemplated going to the pub but decided to carry on. We got onto a farm track that led us up to a crag, where we stopped for a bite to eat. After lunch we continued along the path and up onto the moorland, where we lost the path a bit and had to cross a reservoir instead! Eventually back on the path, after much discussion on who the farmer would shoot first, we made our way along a small stream. We reached the half way point where we turned off the moorland and onto another farm track.

We plodded through a few farms, encountering a group of rather viscous dogs that took a liking to Steesh! Eventually we made our way through Birk Crag and stopped off at the Harrogate Arms pub for a few pints. After light refreshments we made our way through the pine woods and through the valley garden and into the centre of Harrogate. We all stopped off in the pub for a few beers before making our separate ways back home!

Yorkshire Dales – 30th Nov – 2nd Dec
by Vince

We all made it up to the bunkhouse in one piece, well just about! 3 mad people (Martin, Gwyneth and James Paul) had decided to ride up on their bikes, so when we arrived we found 3 rather tired and sweaty people ready for a change of clothes. We soon found our way to the pub, which was right next door, excellent!! We spent a fair few number of hours in the pub before heading back to the bunkhouse for more drinking and ping-pong games, which everyone seemed to be addicted to.

Saturday medium/hard walk
We were all up quite bright and early in the morning, considering the night be fore’s activities! We decided that there were going to be 3 groups; one group led by Brian, one by beci and another group who went sightseeing and eating chocolate cake – led by Chris! My group was with Brian and the group all waited in anticipation for what they had been promised was a true Brian special! We set off in the vans and drove for what seemed to be a fair distance, down some rather steep and twisty roads (thanks Lynne for driving, rather you than me).

We parked up and had a quick toilet stop before heading off. Much fun was had by Vince and (James) Paul as they decided to invent a new game, puddle running. Basically the rules are to run through a deep puddle as fast as possible and try not to get wet, extra points are added for style and commitment! So throughout the day these 2 introduced the sport to a rather bemused looking group! They tried to get Martin involved but he was having none of it and decided to force (James) Paul to walk through a river, much to the amusement of everyone else.

We stopped at one of the peaks (more like mound!) to admire the views and had a slight detour down to a rather spectacular looking waterfall, which Gwyneth thought was Guinness, from the colour of the water. We were back on our way all chatting away merrily and enjoying the walk. Soon we stopped for lunch; where James Paul cracked open some Santa hats, which were a genius idea and many photos followed! After lunch those with the hats felt rather special and wore them with pride, much to the startled looks of fellow walkers! After some confusion of which path to take, we entered the realms of a true Brian special, the path we needed to take was down a fairly steep decent, a mad few went down the sheer face, whilst the rest took the sensible approach and went down the slightly gentler route. Soon we were trudging up some pretty squelchy moor land and commenting on how it was starting to get dark and how many people had head torches. We got onto a farm track path, which seemed to go on forever, eventually reaching the road, by which time it was dusk. Brian discussed possible routes and we decided to go with the shortest and quickest. By now it was pretty dark and those without head torches were wishing they had packed one! We made it back to the bridge to cross the river, much to the disappointment of a few who wanted a river crossing! We got back to the pub all in one piece after enjoying a very good walk, thanks Brian!

We got back to the bunkhouse, where Christmas dinner was being prepared by those who had gone sightseeing that day! We all got showed and were soon onto the booze and having a grand old time!

Sunday medium walk
After much partying and revelling the night before, not many people were in the mood for walk on the Sunday. But a few intrepid explorers decided to head off. We left from the bunkhouse, up a farm track and soon up onto the surrounding moors. We were all chatting about what had happen that previous night and were all gossiping like a bunch of old grannies! Soon we dropped down onto farm land and followed the river along, until we got to a suitable lunch stop, just inside the edge of a forest. Just as we were eating our sandwiches the heavens opened so we all dived for our waterproofs and set off back on the path.

We were soon climbing up a pretty steep track that went through the forest, and there was much discussion about the film the Blair witch project. After a long ascent we were again onto the moorland. A few (lead by Martin) decided they wanted to bag a peak, whilst the rest just wanted to carry on, as by now it was teeming down with rain. So we split into two groups and carried on, across the moor. The other group caught up with us a bit later, as we began the decent back onto the farm track that lead from the bunkhouse. We got back to the bunkhouse with plenty of time so we decided to sneak round the back and see Hardraw Scar waterfall, which is the highest single drop waterfall in the UK. After jumping over a few walls and slipping and sliding on the path down to the waterfall, we saw a magnificent sight. We stayed and took some pictures and headed off back to the bunkhouse and back to Leeds. We all arrived back and went for a traditional post trip curry and watched a slideshow of some pictures taken by the group! A fantastic trip had by all and a good way to end the year off!
