April 2007

A quiet month with most people away from Leeds for Easter, but things hotted up towards the end...

Carnegie Great Student Run - 29th April 2007

It was another unseasonal sunny day (unfortunately) when a large number of club members assembled at Headingley Stadium for the Carnegie Great Student Run. Eirik was still rather the worse for wear after Ipswich's win over Leeds the day before, but that didn't stop him heading straight to the front!

We won't get into precise times, but all the 14 members who participated (that we are aware of) came in within 33 minutes - very credible for a club who's sporting prowess has been questioned on many an occasion!

So congratulations to the following members:

Ben cools down...

- Beci (Pres.) - Lynne - Mark W.
- Vince (Pres. to be) - Ben - Ashley
- (Curly) Matt - Julie (vanden Bos) - Colleen
- Eirik - Nicholas - Claudia
- Funke - Emma

It was only 5km, but the effort on a Sunday morning deserves praise!

After the run we hung around a bit to enjoy the activities on the acre. We took each other on at the inflatable assault course and lounged on the grass before heading off to Arcadia for Sunday lunch.

The post-Arcadia drinks at Kirkstall Abbey failed Lynne & Cathy turned up but everyone else seemed to get lost on the walk down, so here endeth the day!

Malham Day Walk - Saturday 28th April 2007

We all met up at Becketts Park to leave in cars for the beautiful village of Malham. Departure was, as expected, a little later than planned, but eventually we were all sorted into cars and heading through traffic-ridden Ilkley toward the Dales.

It was virtually lunch time by the time we had all arrived, so just about time for a stop in the tea shop...Eventually everyone was rounded up and we headed off towards Janet's Foss. Once there it was time for a break, as some climbed up and round the top of the waterfall. A few metres on we reached the burger van - ice-creams and sandwiches all round - was it lunch time already? (YES!!!)

Following the path through the valley to Gordale Scar, there were many climbers attempting the scale the tricky rock faces. We approached the waterfall, where Dan, Vickie and Finley decided to take the 'scenic' route around the outside. The rest of us scambled up the scar and up to the tops. From there it was a short walk to the tarn where we were to meet up with the others. We made camp on the grass under the sunshine for lunch stop number 3 and a bit of a snooze...

After a good half hour, we heard from Dan and headed towards the cove. The cove was as breathtaking as ever, and it was time for another pause, before heading down into the valley to view from below. After a brief stop at the falcon viewing point, it was back to the village for a couple of pints on the village green, before heading back to Leeds.

It was one of the best day walks for some time, amazing weather (for April), good company and great beer! When's the next trip...??!!
