2006 Sports Ball - 13th May 2006

The supposed 3pm rendezvous at Becketts Park soon slipped to 4pm as people returned home for forgotten tickets and underwear (well, except for the person who went commando all night...) After the wet and windy photo shoot it was back to the bar for pre-ball drinks.

Lynne (on behalf of Annemiek) and Martin headed off early to collect their Club Colours. They received nothing physically, but their photos were taken with the VC and a member of the Athletics Union, despite the Walking Club not being a member! In fact when asked which club we belonged to, the reaction was "Walking? Is that a sport?"...they obviously haven't seen us in action!

The group was soon reunited in the bar at Elland Road, where the girls were soon in tears at the thought of their approaching departure. Luckily we were called to eat before hysteria set in, and soon it was all smiles as the party spirit kicked in. The food was good (did anyone else notice that Paul seemed to get twice as much as anybody else?) and the wine flowed. Soon it was time for the Sports Awards, where the Athletics Union acknowledges the achievements of the clubs during the academic year. Last year the Walking Club won Best Outdoor Club award, and the year before Best Website. This year was to prove fruitless - the Walking Club is not a member of the newly-created Athletics Union and as such was not considered. Never mind, we were still honoured by the many speeches, including a long-winded one from the lovely Carol (did anyone actually know what she was talking about?).

Finally the speeches were finished and it was time to dance. Despite earlier claims that they would definitely not be dancing, everyone was soon on the dancefloor showing the other clubs how it was done. Most of us had the excuse of several glasses of wine - Martin, what was yours? The DJ was a friend of Paul's and it wasn't long before the Walking Club was getting the long-awaited acknowledgement it deserved. It must have been a good party, as before long we looked over our shoulders and realised everybody else had left and our taxis were waiting. After rescuing Lynne from her unconscious state, asleep on the table we headed home to reflect on a great end to the season.
